Where We Are

Shrouded by mighty Himalayan hills, the entire North-East region - comprising the seven sisters (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura) and Sikkim - is believed to be one of the most beautiful regions in South East Asia. The stunning and beautiful dense forests, lying in the foothills of Himalayan ranges are a natural home to a variety of wildlife. Besides, numerous lovely waterfalls, caves, fresh water lakes on the mountain top, seemingly endless winding roads on the mountains of the whispering winds, beautiful lushes green hills partially covered by clouds throughout the year are other attractions of the wonderful North-East India. Here you will find World Heritage Sites like Manas National Park and Kaziranga National Park.

This beautiful land is home to diversified tribal groups - over 300 different tribes!, with each having their own distinct culture, languages, interesting dance forms and festivals, giving them a unique cultural identity. Brilliantly attired in their traditional, colourful dresses, they are an anthropologist’s dream. Known for their democratic and egalitarian values, they stand apart from the divisiveness of creed and caste that often marks mainstream Indian society.

This isolated and mysterious land of natural abundance is still very much unexplored even today by the outside world, hence, this alluring land of North East India is one of the most treasured eco-friendly sites in India. Moreover, North East has its own charm that will sweep you off your feet. This is where you will find us; this is where we are!

Our Headquarters: Guwahati – Gateway to the North-East

The Salesians of Don Bosco chose Guwahati, Assam for the Headquarters of their first university in India as it is rightly called the ‘Gateway to the North-East,’ being centrally located in the region with an international airport and excellent road and rail connections to all parts of India. Besides, with the increasing emphasis being placed by the Government of India on its ‘Look East Policy’, Guwahati is humming with activity and development, making it one among the five fastest growing cities in the country.

Why We Are Here

True to the educational philosophy and praxis of Don Bosco, catering to the needs of the minorities, the under-privileged and the tribal population undergirds the plans and policies of the University – that is why we are here.

A vibrant department of cultural studies has been set up to address the task of collating information, and teaching and researching into the nuances and beauty of cultural differences.

By designing courses of study that promote self-reliance rather than dependence, especially employment-oriented professional courses, tailored to the needs of the society in the North-East, the University contributes towards the socio-economic development of the region. A Department of North-East India Studies under the School of Religion and Culture focuses on understanding, developing, promoting and celebrating the cultural diversity of this region.

By providing a forum for research and debate on key human issues of religion and culture, peace and justice, ethics and governance, human rights etc., the University is becoming a lively hub for the advancement of tribal society and the development of democratic ideals and enlightened living.
